Why have a Pre-Season Picnic?

We usually send a flyer home with the players the first day of practice, letting parents know when the picnic is and identifying what type of food each grade should bring. Soccer Boosters officers split up the list of players and call to see how many are coming from each family to help plan for hot dogs and hamburgers, plates, etc., to purchase. Soccer Boosters provides the hot dogs and hamburgers, rolls and paper products, condiments and coolers for the soda. We invite High School administrators, Mr. Fisher and the coaches to attend. After people have eaten, the Soccer Booster President says a few words. Then the parents of the boys meet with the boys’ coaches and the parents of the girls meet with the girl’s coaches.

We have Soccer Booster sign up sheets available, and asked people if they wanted to join. We gave soccer decals to incoming freshmen.  The Clothing fund raiser sheets are given out.

SUMMER CAMP - New in 2004

We are sponsoring a summer camp for all players both boys and girls and incoming freshmen.  It will be given by Vision Training the week of June 27th.  It will be designated especially for the needs of our players.  Basic skills will be emphasized since many players have never gone to camp and need to reinforcement that is not always done during a season.  The cost is $170.00.

This was a great success for the 28 players that attended and we look forward to doing it again in 2005.

CLOTHING SALE

We try to get the Clothing Sale started as soon as the practices start so the players can get the soccer clothing before the season is over. However, we have found that we need to give them about two weeks after school starts to be able to sell to friends in school.

In order to be ready by the start of practices in August, we have had to decide on a design in the spring, so flyers can be prepared with the design on them, ready to hand out on the first day of practice. We have tried to get the kids to come up with designs. Some years they have more ideas than others. Coaches have spring meetings with the players. We try to have a design ready for those meetings so the players can vote on them or make suggestions for changes.  We have a contest with the art department with a $25.00 prize.

The clothing is more than a fund raiser - it is a way to promote the soccer program at the high school.

PROGRAMS

We do a Program at the start of the season that had all the Boys’ and Girls’ teams listed, with each players’ number and year in school.  We would like to have a volunteer to get the numbers from the girl's and the boy's team as soon as the uniforms are handed out. This way we were able to get the Programs out at the start of the season.

We also did Programs for the night games. We had a difficult time getting rosters of opposing teams through the coaches. It seems like a good idea for someone to contact the athletic office at the opposing schools early and ask for a roster to be sent to someone in Soccer Boosters. This would be needed for the Senior Recognition   and  Friendship cup game.

In 2004, we changed the program to be an ad program as a fund raiser.  We asked that each player try and sell $50.00 worth of ads.  It is handed out for free at the boys and girls varsity games.

PICTURES

We need to arrange for the pictures with a local photographer - the same as the rec programs - this is under discussion. We can also have someone from Soccer Boosters take the pictures of the Seniors early in September so that it ready for the Senior Recognition

DIRECTIONS

Soccer Boosters provides directions to away games to parents. Last year we distributed these at the Picnic, so they would have them for pre-season games as well. We update the directions each year as we get more information. These are available on the website - directions

HOAGIES

Soccer Boosters provides hoagies and sodas for each of the teams to have on their way back from an away game at Franklin. since this is a long trips. This involves ordering the hoagies and picking up sodas and delivering them to the team’s bus before it leaves the High School to take the team to the game.

SENIOR RECOGNITION NIGHT

We usually do Senior Recognition Night at the last night game played in the Stadium..  This year the game is Monday Oct 25th against DelVal.  Girls are at 5 and the boys at 7.   For Senior Recognition Night, we arrange for corsages for mothers of all Senior players. These can be obtained from the Ag. Shop at the High School. We also print Senior Bios in the program for the game. The earlier we can obtain the information for the Senior Bios the easier it is to get the program finished early enough for copying. We have included in the program a picture of the Senior boys and one of the Senior girls. This means that the photos have to be scanned into a computer. In the past, we have provided a script for the announcer, which included an introductory statement as well as a copy of the Senior Bios.

Invitations are sent to the parents of the Senior players to attend the Senior Recognition night. Parents also need to get directions about what time to arrive and where to meet.

For Senior Recognition, we have had the players and their parents stand on the field, facing the home bleachers. We have had them take a step forward as their bio is read.

Also, on Senior Recognition Night, we have invited elementary school players from the Youth Soccer League from Lopatcong, Pohatcong, Greenwich, Phillipsburg and All Saints teams to come to the game. We distribute flyers to the teams, inviting them to come to the game. Mr. Fisher has agreed in the past to let them come into the stadium for free if they wear their team jersey and are accompanied by a coach. But you need to check with him about this each year.

FRIENDSHIP CUP GAME

The last boys’ and girl's game of each season is against Perth Amboy. The winner gets to keep the Friendship Cup trophy for the year. In 2004, the game is in Phillipsburg. When this was started, Mr. Stahl asked the Soccer Boosters to provide food for both teams after the game, if it is played at home. We have provided hot dogs, chips, soda and desserts. Soccer Boosters have purchased the hot dogs, rolls, soda and chips and asked parents to bring desserts. In 2004 the girls are also playing against Perth Amboy's Varsity and JV.

SOCCER BANQUET

We set up the Soccer Banquet Committee at the October meeting.  Sometimes a parent who is not an officer or even a regular attendee of meetings will chair the Banquet Committee. We have also been able to get some other parents of seniors involved. Usually most of the parents who attend the monthly meetings end up being involved in the Committee. The Committee will probably have to meet at times other than the regularly scheduled Soccer Booster meetings.

In the past we have given pullover hooded jackets to the seniors. The chair of this must get the sizes and the names the players want on the jacket and order the jackets. In 2001 we gave them fleece pullovers and a pen with their name on it.  Each year we discuss with the seniors what gift they would like as long as it is within our budget.

We invite to the Banquet the coaches, trainers and administrators. On the invitation, we have indicated they can bring a guest. We also invite the High School students who keep score and time for the Varsity teams.

The flyer asked that players from each grade bring a certain type of item to the Banquet. They were asked to call someone on the Banquet Committee to let them know how may people would be coming. There has been no charge for players and their families. But, we have charged $5 for guests they wish to bring.  This is held at the Phillipsburg Middle School.

The big hit of the evening is the slide show with pictures and video clips from the season of all 4 teams.  JV is usually sparse so we asked parent to take as many pictures as possible.  Each team is also given a camera to take shots during practice, on the bus or at other get togethers.

INFORMATION FOR SOCCER BOOSTER PRESIDENT

RESERVING ROOMS AT PHS

Phillipsburg Board of Education Building and Facilities Request form needs to be completed and signed by the Soccer Booster President. It is a good idea to keep a copy of the requests being submitted. The form is turned in to the High School principal for his signature. He forwards it to the district’s Central Office for processing. How quickly it is acted on depends on when the next Board meeting is. It is a good idea to submit the requests in the spring for the next school year since, once you have a room approved for a specific meeting or event, changes in dates or times can be made by contacting the High School. Any changes or questions about reserving rooms can be directed to Joann in the athletic office. Once the Board has approved use of the rooms, the President will receive a copy of the approved request. It’s a good idea to keep extra blank copies of the form around. If you go to the High School to get extra forms they will give you forms with all the instructions and policy attached.

RESERVING WALTER’S PARK FOR THE PRE-SEASON PICNIC

The Pavilion at Walter’s Park can be reserved by calling the Firth Youth Center. There is no charge for residents of Phillipsburg and since we are part of the PHS. The Youth Center will mail a permit to use the Pavilion.

MAILING

In order to get a mailing list and phone numbers quickly, we asked coaches to have players sign a list on the first day of practice. The list includes address and phone number. We also use this list to call families about the pre-season picnic.

Minutes of Soccer Booster meetings: They are found on the website.
